TCEQ Sunset Review : How to transform Texas' environmental agency.

Join LWV Dallas and Rita Beving of Public Citizen to learn about Sunset Review and how you can make a difference for North Texas.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is undergoing Sunset Review at the state legislature now through 2023. The environmental agency is one of 21 state agencies undergoing a comprehensive assessment, which is a state-mandated process that occurs only every 12 years.

After decades of not meeting federal air standards, the DFW area faces being bump up from “serious” to“severe” violator of ozone pollution by the EPA (Source).  Between 2010 and 2020, a Grist investigation found that the agency's oversight of large polluting facilities in Texas declined sharply, dropping to barely 2,000 inspections from 7,500. At the same time, the agency issues fines on illegal release of pollution only about 3 percent of the time (Source). Instead of finding ways to protect communities, the agency routinely approves permits over the public's objections, claiming their hand are tied by the state's already lax environmental codes. TCEQ know that our health and well-being come first.

Texans deserve better. And the Sunset Review Process allows the public to weigh in on how the agency functions and continues in the future.
